Sanctification simply means to set apart for God’s special use and purpose by putting off all filth and impurities 2Tim. 2:19-21. From scriptures, we understand that God is holy, He cannot behold evil and iniquity Hab. 1:13. Therefore, everyone that desires an intimate relationship with God, and to be used by Him, must separate himself from sin and iniquity 2Cor. 6:14-18. This is what we mean by sanctification.
Pathway to Sanctification.
In essence, the responsibilities believers that desire a sanctified life must embrace.
- Engage the name of Jesus against sin.
The name of Jesus is specifically given by God and anointed for its mission of empowering man to overcome sin SOS 1:3; Mat. 1:21. In essence, with faith in the name, the believer is guaranteed victory in the battle against sin Php. 2:9-11; Pro. 18:10.
- Flee from all traps of evil.
To flee means to run; the believer who will win the battle against sin must learn to run at the slightest appearance of evil, sin, and unrighteousness 1Ths. 5:21; 1Cor. 6:18. A sanctified life will not be possible when one is comfortable and convenient with sin being around 1Sam. 3:13,16-18.
- Keep a godly company.
The word company here means friends, or the people in one’s close circle. A believer will only be able to win the battle against sin when he keeps friends who are godly Pro. 13:20; Psa. 1:1-3. Ungodly friends will lead to ungodly live, no matter how spiritually strong the believer is 1Cor. 15:33.
Illustration – When one is walking on an elevated platform, while holding hands with another person walking on the ground. It is easier for the one on the ground to bring one on the elevated platform to his level, than otherwise.
- Faith Is a must to live a sanctified life.
Faith empowers the believer to do things that pleases God, thereby live the sanctified life Heb. 11:6. Faith is a personal responsibility, which is built by taking personal responsibility to feed on God’s word Hab. 2:4; Rms. 10:17.
Benefits of Sanctification.
In essence, what everyone that wins the battle against sin will enjoy.
- It secures access to revelation.
Revelation means spiritual understanding of God’s word, which makes the word applicable to life Jn. 6:6-11. Revelation will trigger supernatural breakthrough Isa. 60:1-2; Gal. 2:2. Sanctification is the believer’s access to the world of revelation Pro. 1:23; Psa. 25:14.
- It secures answered prayers.
Sanctification grants believer’s free access on the prayer altar, with the outcome of unhindered and express answer Psa. 66:18-19; Pro. 28:13. Also, sanctification makes for boldness, which is a vital demand for answer in prayers Pro. 28:1; Heb. 4:16.
- It secures access to fresh oil.
Fresh oil is a vital demand for destruction of yokes, and to flourish in life Isa. 10:27; Psa. 92:10-15. We understand from scriptures that fresh oil is released when one wins the war against sin Lk. 5:37-39; Pro. 1:23.
- It engenders divine health and wholeness.
Sickness and disease gained access into man’s life through sin. It means when the battle against sin is won, man will become free of sickness to enjoy health and wholeness Jn. 5:1-8,14; Mk. 2:1-12(5).
- It engenders promotion.
Sin is a spiritual weight that will prevent the victim from rising in life Heb. 12:1. Therefore, when the battle against sin is won, man will naturally begin to enjoy supernatural lifting in life Pro. 14:34. A good scriptural example is Daniel Dan. 1:8; 2:19,23-30; 6:1-4,28.
- It secures durable riches.
Sin brought man into the life of hardship and poverty Gen. 3:17-19. When the battle against sin is won, man will regain his access to the world of enduring riches again Psa. 112:1-3; Joel 2:21-26.
Cost of Ungodliness.
- It blocks access to divine wisdom.
Sin makes the brain dull, thereby robbing the victim of wisdom Gen. 2:19; 3:7,21; Jdg. 16:6-21. In essence, sin blocks access to divine wisdom Pro. 9:10; dan. 1:8; 2:16-19.
- It stirs shame and reproach.
Sin robs its victim of glory and honor always, which will result in shame and reproach Pro. 14:34; Jdg. 16:23-25.
- It stirs fear and dread.
Sin makes its victim fearful, which in turn brings into torment Gen. 3:9-10; Pro. 28:1; 1Jn. 4:18.
Answer to Sin.
The only answer to sin is genuine repentance Acts 2:37-38. Repentance means:
- To acknowledge one’s sin 1:8.
- To be sorry for one’s life of sin 7:10.
- To openly confess and seek God for forgiveness 1:9-10.
- To forsake it 5:14; 8:11.
In conclusion, remember that where sin has been conquered is where glory will reign Exo. 15:11. It’s your time our time of glory, we must therefore labor for sanctification for us not to muss our time.
To anyone reading this that will love to give his/her life to Christ, pray this prayer out loud with me from your heart: “Lord Jesus, I surrender my life to you today. Forgive me my sins; wash me with your blood. I believe you died for me; on the third day you rose again that I may be justified. Right now, I believe that my sins are forgiven; I’m justified by your blood; I’m born-again; I’m saved; I’m a child of God; I’m free from the power of sin to serve the living God. Thank you, Jesus, for receiving me; thank you Jesus for restoring me; thank you Jesus for
Prayer.
- Father, in the name of Jesus, consume me with your fire and cause everything that defiles to be burnt off in my life 12:29.
- Father in the name of Jesus, I receive the grace to walk in the pathway of sanctification from today and the rest of my life 15:10.
