What is thanksgiving? Thanksgiving is celebrating God for what He has done Psa. 92:1-2; 103:1-5. Every time a  believer celebrates God for the good thing that has happened, God remembers what is yet to happen and He is moved to do it right away Lk. 17:17-19. We understand from scriptures that whatever God does will always make men to wonder Psa. 118:23. Also, every genuine thanksgiving usually graduates into praise. While thanksgiving is celebrating God for what He has done; praise is celebrating God for who He is Psa. 110:4. Every time God is praised, He moves to do wonder Exo. 15:11. In essence, there is no way one engages in thanksgiving and remains the same in life! Nonetheless, a sound understanding of the reason for a thing is essential to prevent abuse which will lead to destruction Pro. 29:18. Therefore, why do we need to give thanks?

Why Do we Give Thanks?

1. Thanksgiving is a debt the believer owe God.

This is both as individuals and as a church Lk. 17:17-19; 2Ths. 2:13. One attribute of God we must never forget is that, He waits for the return of His children to celebrate Him for the things He has done in their lives Lk. 17:15-19; Eph. 5:20. This is why thanksgiving is a debt every believer owe God, and it must be timely to have our blessing preserved Jer. 13:15-17; Mal. 2:1-3.

• Thanksgiving is vital in order to acknowledge God as the source of all good happenings in our lives.

Everything good that happens has only one source, and that is God Jms. 1:17. Scriptures show us that everything worth celebrating in man’s life is not by his strength, might or ability, but God’s hand at work 2Cor. 4:7; 1Cor. 4:6-7; Jn. 15:5; 3:27; Psa. 127:1-2. It is commonly said that when a river forgets its source it runs dry. In essence, when the believer fails to recognize the source, he will soon stop seeing good things happen in his life.

• Thanksgiving is to make the believer escape the error of stealing God’s glory.

When people applaud for any good thing that happens, the believer must not allow them give the applause to him, else he is stealing the glory that belongs to God. One other attribute of God is that He will allow any man steal or share His glory with Him Isa. 42:8. Everyone that fell for this error didn’t survive it; Nebuchadnezzar Dan. 4:29-33; a certain rich man Lk. 12:16-21; Herod Acts 12:21-23.

• Thanksgiving invokes supernatural multiplication.

We serve the God of multiplication, who has the ordained the believer for continuous and unstoppable change of levels Deut. 1:11; Pro. 4:18. From scriptures, we know that to every provision of God there is the demand the believer must embrace to take delivery of God’s provision Deut. 28:1. Thanksgiving is the covenant demand for supernatural multiplication in life Jer. 30:19; Jn. 6:6-12.

• Thanksgiving invokes fulfilment of prophecies.

Redemption brings the believer into the great promises of God that offers a great, glorious, and enviable destiny when they become fulfilled 2Pet. 1:4. These promises of God include; those of scriptures, personal word from the Holy Spirit, and declaration from God’s prophets. They are sure to come to pass, but this is as the believer embraces the required demand Isa. 55:10-11; 14:24,27; 1Tim. 1:18. Scriptures make us to understand that thanksgiving is the will of God for the believer in every situation, when this is done, it enforces the delivery of whatever God has promised 1Ths. 5:18; Heb. 10:36.

In conclusion, every time the believer takes on thanksgiving, God respond to his life. And every time God respond, it becomes the time for that believer for whatever he has desired. I strongly believe this is your long awaited time!

Forgive me my sins; wash me with your blood. I believe you died for me, on the third day you rose again that I may be justified. Right now, I believe that my sins are forgiven; I’m justified by your blood; I’m born-again; I’m saved; I’m a child of God; I’m free from the power of sin to serve the living God. Thank you Jesus for receiving me; thank you Jesus for restoring me; thank you Jesus for saving me.”
