New birth promises the abundant life Jn. 10:10; Deu. 8:7-9.
In reality, many believers don’t seem to experience abundant life, often due to a lack of spiritual growth Exo. 23:30; Isa. 28:10-13.
Spiritual growth is foundational to experiencing the beauty of the Christina life.
A believer’s Christian experience cannot exceed the level of their spiritual growth.
In my opinion, spiritual growth is an aspect of the Christian life that the church needs to emphasize again.
The lack of emphasis may be responsible for the low quality of the average believer in our churches today.
Experiencing spiritual growth begins with a good understanding of what it is.
What is Spiritual Growth?
- It is becoming more like the person of Christ.
Spiritual growth is the process of becoming more like the person of Christ in our thoughts, words, and conduct.
The name “Christian” originated at Antioch when people observed that the believers in Christ were a complete replica of Christ Acts 11:26.
After being saved, one must unlearn certain behaviors, learn how Christ would act, and adopt His ways.
This process is what we call spiritual growth.
- It is equipping with the virtues and values.
Spiritual growth is the process of becoming equipped with the virtues and values that constitute a true life of godliness.
Godliness means being life God – thinking, speaking, and responding as He does.
Essentially, it is about exhibiting or duplicating the nature of God 2Pet. 1:3-4; Col. 4:12.
Prior to salvation, every person possesses the nature of their biological parents. At new birth, one is born of God and must grow in the nature of God 2Pet. 1:3-4; Col. 4:12.
We achieve this by embodying God’s nature is, and adopting it 2Pet. 1:5-11.
- It is being transferred into God’s image.
Spiritual growth is the process of becoming transferred into the image of God.
This means the believer should reflect God in their life.
Just as a husband and wife may begin to resemble each other over time, believers are called to reflect God’s image.
“Image” refers to the picture in the mind and the ideas we hold about someone or something.
Therefore, developing into God’s image involves possessing the same mindset as God. This process is called mind renewal Rms. 12:2; Eph. 4:23-24.
Remember, the mind is the control point of life, the state of the mind is how life will be Pro. 23:7; 4:23.
Thus, when believers align their minds with God’s, they will reflect Him perfectly.
- It is building a vibrant spirit.
Spiritual growth is the process of building a vibrant and robust spirit capable of taking charge over the mind and body.
Scriptures teach that the spirit gives life and sustains the mind and body Jn. 6:63; Pro. 18:14.
The state of ta believer’s spirit will determine the quality of their life.
Building a healthy, strong, and vibrant spirit that can give life to the mind and body is referred to as spiritual growth.
In conclusion,
Everything in life comes down to individual choice Deu. 30:19.
When a choice is made, the power to act is released,
Let’s choose to grow spiritually.
