Just as growth in the natural realm doesn’t just happen but is made to happen, spiritual growth also requires intention and effort Lk 2:40,52.
Everyone who desires to grow spiritually needs to subscribe to the following principles.
- Be Genuinely Born Again.
Spiritual growth begins with experiencing spiritual birth Jn. 3:3-6.
Until an individual is genuinely born again, he cannot experience spiritual growth, he can only engage in spiritual activities, which won’t result in true growth.
Such individuals are referred to in Scriptures as having a form of godliness but lacking the power expected 2Tim 3:5.
To be genuinely born again involves:
- Acknowledgement of one’s sinful life 1Jn.1:8.
- Godly sorrow for one’s sinful life 2Cor 7:10.
- Repentance and forsaking the life of sin Acts 2:37-38.
- Invite Jesus into one’s life and confessing Him as Lord and Savior Rms. 10:10.
- Commit to Invest Time Alone with God.
Everyone who desires spiritual growth must be ready to invest time for personal interaction with God.
Whoever one spends time with is who one will grow to be like Mk. 3:14; Acts 4:13; 11:26.
Case study: Moses Exo 34:25.
- Commit to Feed on God’s Word.
A basic requirement for growth is a good diet, God’s Word is the food for the spirit and the soul of man Mat. 4:4; 1Pet 2:2.
It nourishes, strengthens, shapes our character, and transforms our lives.
We cannot talk about experiencing spiritual growth if we are not committed to daily feeding on God’s Word.
- Commit to the Life of Prayer.
Prayer is the platform of talking with God Jer 33:3; Mat. 7:7.
‘Talking’ is a means of getting to know someone; the more we talk with God, the more we will know Him and grow to be like Him.
This is particularly true when we engage in praying in the Spirit Jude 20.
- Commit to Regular Attendance of Fellowship.
Fellowship is the gathering of believers to worship God, it is a place of renewal and strength Psa. 84:7, Oba. 17.
Believer are commanded not to forsake fellowship, lest their spiritual life be negatively affected Heb. 10:25. \ .
There are spiritual forces at work in fellowship that create a mysterious environment, guaranteeing the growth of believers Heb. 12:22-24.
- Surround Yourself with Friends Passionate About Spiritual Growth.
Friends have a significant influence on one’s life, moving one’s life in the direction of their life Psa. 1:1; 1Cor 15:33.
Every believer who desires spiritual growth must surround himself with those who are passionate about spiritual development Pro. 17:27.
- Embrace Trials and Challenges.
Trials and challenges are ways that God builds strength and spiritual maturity into believers Jms. 1:2-4; 1Pet 1:6-8.
The believer who runs from trials and challenges denies himself the opportunity to experience certain dimensions of spiritual growth.
In conclusion,
- The believer who embraces these responsibilities will find that spiritual growth becomes a normal experience.
- As long as the believer continues to practice these principles, his growth will be unstoppable.
Be blessed!
