The scriptures clearly instruct to know ourselves our state in our Christian walk, which can be achieved by examining ourselves 2Cor. 13:5.
In essence, there must be measures or yardsticks with which we can conduct self-examination as believers.
These are the evidences that shows genuine spiritual growth, and they are broadly presented as follows.
- Increasing Interest to Know and Understand the Person of God.
When there is spiritual growth, the believer’s interest to know more of God will increase Php. 3:10.
This will result in a greater understanding of the person and ways of God 1Cor. 13:11.
- Increasing Hatred for Sin, Ungodly Things, and Ways of the World.
When a believer experiences true spiritual growth, their taste for sin, every form of ungodliness, and the ways of the world will diminish Heb 1:9; Psa. 45:7.
This indicates that the fear of God, which compels a person to run from sin, will grow stronger in their life.
- Increasing Conformity to God’s Word.
Genuine spiritual growth leads to a stronger desire to obey God’s Word Jn. 14:21, 1Jn. 2:15.
Essentially, the believer’s life will become more aligned with God’s Word.
- Increasing Fruit Bearing.
Fruit bearing can be broadly divided into two (2) categories; the fruit of the Spirit, which pertains to godly character Gal 5:21-23, and winning of the unsaved to Christ Jn. 15:16.
As the believer grows spiritually, they will begin to bear fruit in greater measure.
- Increasing Interest in the Things of God and the Kingdom.
When a believer experiences genuine spiritual growth, their interest in the things of God and the kingdom will deepen Mat. 6:24-33.
Such a believer will willingly and excitedly spend more time pursuing God doing His work.
- Increasing Love for Others.
A sure way to identify a true believer is by their love for the brethren and all people Jn. 13:34-35; Mat. 22:37-40.
Thus, spiritual growth is expressed through an increasing love for others 1Jn. 3:17-18; 4:20.
- More Intense Spiritual Battles and Persecution.
As the believer grows spiritually, their perspective on battles and persecution will shift from viewing them as obstacles to seeing them as necessities for progress Jms. 1:2.
Also, the dimension and intensity of the battles and persecution will increase Mat. 5:11-12; 1Pet 4:12-16; 2Cor 4:17.
In conclusion,
Growth simply means change.
When a believer’s life does not reflect any change in thought, word, character, zeal, commitment to God and the church, they are merely engaged in religious activity, which cannot produce spiritual growth.
Be blessed!
