Memory verse:
“Hear ye, and give ear; be not proud: for the LORD hath spoken. 16 Give glory to the LORD your God, before he cause darkness, and before your feet stumble upon the dark mountains, and, while ye look for light, he turn it into the shadow of death, and make it gross darkness. 17 But if ye will not hear it, my soul shall weep in secret places for your pride; and mine eye shall weep sore, and run down with tears, because the LORD’S flock is carried away captive.” – Jer. 13:15-17.
Scripture identifies the worst enemy of the lifestyle of thanksgiving as pride (Jer. 13:15-17). When an individual stops giving thanks to God, life comes to a halt; this is because without God, we can do nothing (Jn. 15:5). Thanksgiving guarantees securing God’s working presence in a believer’s life (Psa. 100:4; 22:3). Therefore, the proud has no place in the kingdom and no future (Pro. 6:16-17). We need good understanding to overcome the subtle nature of pride.
Scriptural Understanding and Example That Help for Victory Over Pride.
- The Example of King Herod.
Herod gave a speech to the people of Tyre and Sidon on a certain day; it was so great the people said they heard the voice of a god (Acts 12:20-22). He failed to quickly return the glory to God, overtaken by pride, and was eaten up by worms on his throne (Acts 12:23).
- Cost of Pride.
Pride moves God against an individual; this blocks the way forward for the individual (1Pet. 5:5-6; Jms. 4:6).
- Failing to Give God the Glory.
Scripture states clearly that when an individual fails to give the glory to God, he has been caught up by pride Jn. 15:5. We must not allow pride to get a hold on us.
Jesus is Lord!
