Memory verse:
“Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.”
“Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.”
- Php. 4:4-5.
The scriptures command the believer to rejoice always Php. 4:4. This means the tendency of the believer’s situation will ordinarily suggest the contrary. God then gives the instruction to help the believer with the right attitude that will enable him make the most of his life. The scriptures make us to understand that joy and rejoicing will secure God’s manifest presence, and this is the secret for sweat-less and all-round breakthrough in life Psa. 16:11; Psa. 114:1-8. Joy is not a gift that is imparted, but a virtue that is cultivated Gal. 5:22-2. This means being joyful is individual’s responsibility.
Scriptural understanding that empowers the believer for joy and rejoicing.
- Joy and rejoicing invokes praise, which secures God’s presence.
God’s presence is the believer’s guarantee for fulfillment in life Exo. 33:14. Despite the great things that he has done, Moses knew this and refused to do anything without God’s presence Exo. 33:15. The scriptures show us the joy will result in praise, and praise will secure God’s presence Jms. 5:13; Psa. 22:3.
- Joy and rejoicing secures a fruitful life.
There is nothing more frustrating in life than to put in efforts with no result to show for it. This is what is referred to as unfruitfulness. The scriptures make us to understand that joy and rejoicing empowers believer’s effort to deliver expected results and outcome Psa. 67:5-7; Joel 1:11-12.
- Refrain from comparison, which breeds depression.
Naturally, a man will measure his progress by how he is fairing in comparison with others. The scriptures says this is foolishness, which will result in failure 2Cor. 10;12; Mat. 7:26-27. Comparing oneself to another will produce wrong judgment because, we are running a difference race as individuals Heb, 12:2. Therefore, there is no basis for comparison.
